Discoveries and Breakthroughs
Scientists have discovered Ice XXI, a previously unknown crystalline phase of water, by rapidly compressing water samples to pressures above 2 gigapascals (20,000 times atmospheric pressure) within microseconds. This 21st known form of ice has a large, intricate unit cell and its density is comparable to the high-pressure ice layers believed to exist inside icy moons like Ganymede and Titan, offering new clues for planetary science.
